Interview with a Writing Duo…Authors:Tamara Thorne & Allistair Cross

31l6DU3VVVL 61ZHnam-LQL._SX150_TS: What a compliment!  This dynamic duo’s publicist requested an interview!  ‘How fascinating, to interview co-authors’, I said to myself,  ‘how does it all work? Two people writing the same story.

Q. Where/when did you two meet?

A. Alistair had just been published when he started doing author interviews on his personal blog. As a fan of Tamara Thorne’s since the 1990s, he was eager to have her on. He contacted her through Facebook, she agreed to the interview and they instantly hit it off.

Q. How did you start to write together?

A.Accidentally. Normally we both hate telephones, but this was the exception and our daily conversations and texts would end up turning into brainstorming sessions. In the following months, we naturally transitioned into an official collaboration, quickly finding that we share similar work ethics, sensibilities and styles. This, along with our twin senses

of rude humor, keep us going. We love writing together in our virtual office and have plans for many more collaborative works.

Q. How does the division of work/writing happen?

A. We’ve learned that in most cases, authors don’t sit down and write together, but in our case, that’s exactly what happens. We don’t divide our work – it’s a true collaboration. We meet every morning on Skype, then go into the Cloud where we can both work on the same page. We brainstorm, write, edit, and even play with our cats together.

Q. Where do you write? Do you have a special room, shed, barn, special space for your writing? Or tell us about your ‘dream’ work space.

A. We have found that we work best when not only our minds, but our physical surroundings are in synch. Therefore, we both work in our cellars in cozy nooks that are just big enough for a desk and chair, a small bookshelf and our cats, Stalker Kitty and Billy Bob. (The litter pans are in the darkness Cover.thorme.Crossbeyond.) We each keep half a dozen troll dolls on our desks and small coolers filled with Mountain Dew and Pepsi Max so that our breaks are filled with fizzy caffeine goodness. Because we both get nervous in the dark, especially when writing horror, this set-up – lights off except where we work – keeps our noses to the grindstone.

Q. Do you have any special rituals when you sit down to write? (a neat work space, sharpened #2 pencils, legal pad, cup of tea, glass of brandy, favorite pajamas, etc.)

A. This will sound silly, but yes, we do. We warm up by telling each other what our troll dolls were up to

during the night. That gets the imagination going, and sometimes we really freak ourselves out if the trolls aren’t exactly where we think we left them. This will sound weird, too, but we have found ourselves to be more in synch if we dress alike. Tamara wears sweat pants like Alistair instead of jeans these days and Alistair wears Tamara’s black wife-beaters instead of button-downs. It serves to make us feel even more connected.

Q. Could you tell us something about yourself that we might not already know?

A. Alistair used to be a male stripper known as Thor, and Tamara tipped him before she knew who he was.
